Power of Journaling - Is More Than Just Writing

26/12/2024

Journal your way to self-discovery and growth.

In today's fast-paced world, finding moments of peace and reflection can be challenging. That's where journaling comes in. This simple yet profound practice has the power to transform your life in countless ways.

Over the year of journaling, I eventually learned it was more about writing out my thoughts. There is a science behind what I do, which is good for my well-being. From improving mental health to boosting creativity, journaling offers a multitude of benefits that can enrich your everyday existence.

In my readings, I have learned about two types of journaling formats that are particularly commonplace in psychotherapy (Sohal et al., 2022). Since I am not a therapist, and psychology is not my specialty or profession, I will merely share the definitions:

Expressive writing - focuses on the innermost feelings and thoughts - the emotional experience rather than events, people, or objects.

Gratitude journaling - focuses on the positive aspects of life by capturing situations, events, and interactions for which we are grateful.

A Personal Journey

I have done both as a journaler for years, and I can honestly say that it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Journaling has helped me to:

  • Manage stress and anxiety: When I feel overwhelmed by work, business, or life, I turn to my journal to express my thoughts and emotions. This helps me process my feelings and find clarity.
  • Increase self-awareness: Journaling has helped me understand myself on a deeper level. I have learned about my strengths, weaknesses, and values and how they fit my purpose.
  • Boost my creativity: Journaling is a great way to spark new ideas. I write freely for a few minutes, and often, inspiration strikes. I even wrote in a list-making format and then used the accomplished task as part of gratitude writing.

Journaling benefited me throughout my expat journey, helping me stay focused on my goals and purpose.

The Science Behind Journaling

It is not just my personal anecdotes that support the benefits of journaling. Numerous studies have shown that journaling can:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety: A study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology found that expressive writing can help people cope with stress and improve their overall well-being.
  • Improve cognitive function: Research has shown that journaling can enhance memory, attention, and problem-solving skills.
  • Boost creativity: A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that expressive writing can promote divergent thinking, which is essential for creativity.

So, take it from me… after checking the science, I now understand why expressing yourself creatively about your experiences or gratitude makes sense.

Benefits of Journaling

Okay, let me not waste any more time; here are some of the benefits:

  • Emotional well-being: provides an outlet for expressing thoughts and emotions, helping to manage stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Mental clarity: can help clarify thoughts and ideas, improving cognitive function and problem-solving skills.
  • Personal growth: facilitates self-discovery and personal development, helping individuals set goals and track progress.
  • Creativity: can stimulate imagination and inspire new ideas, making it a valuable tool for writers, artists, and other creative individuals.
  • Resilience: can help build resilience and cope with challenges, fostering a sense of hope and optimism.

I have benefited most from journaling because it allows me to express the thoughts, feelings, and emotions that are lingering in my head, whether they are sadness, frustration, grief, or gratitude.

If you're new to journaling, don't worry. It doesn't have to be perfect. The most important thing is to start and make it a regular habit. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Find a journal you love: Whether you prefer a classic notebook or a digital app, choose a journal that inspires you.
  • Set aside time for journaling: Even 10-15 minutes daily can make a big difference.
  • Don't worry about grammar or spelling: Just let your thoughts flow freely.
  • Get creative: Experiment with different journaling techniques, such as freewriting, gratitude journaling, or question journaling.

You can focus your journaling on aspects of your life, such as your travels, health-living journey, sleep/dreams, healing, or something that resonates with you. Write about what matters to you.

In conclusion,  journaling is a powerful tool for self-discovery, personal growth, and well-being. By exploring your inner world through journaling, you can unlock your full potential and live a more fulfilling life.
