What to Do with Your Unused Local Currency During Your Travels?

Donate, Spend, Exchange, Save or Pay it Forward — You choose

As a traveler and expat, I use the local currency at my destination. It never fails that I have some unused notes or coins when I am ready to depart. In fact, I have about twenty (20) different currencies floating among my travel wallet these days. Some of these are keepsakes, while others I hope to use on a return trip to that location.

We know that making the most of your travel experience often involves immersing yourself in the local culture. It means trying new foods, exploring unfamiliar places, and connecting with the locals. And inevitably, part of that experience includes using local currency.

Whether it’s coins in your pocket or bills in your wallet, you are likely to end up with some unused local currency before leaving a country.

Many travelers and even expats are unsure of what to do with it, often leaving it behind as useless pocket change or forgetting about it altogether. I am here to help you think; differently and find a purpose for these funds. As an avid traveler and expat, I have compiled some helpful tips on what to do with your unused local currency to make the most of it and leave a positive impact on the places you visit.

Donate to Local Charities:

One of the most meaningful ways to utilize your unused local currency is by donating it to local charities or organizations. Many countries have NGOs or charitable foundations that support various causes such as education, healthcare, or poverty alleviation. These organizations often accept donations in local currency, and your contribution can go a long way in making a difference in the lives of local communities.

Research reputable organizations and donate your unused currency to support their noble causes. Not only will you be giving back to the community, but you will also be positively impacting the place you visit. Even if you reach the airport, many airport terminals have donation boxes for a local charity for those last few coins.

Local markets are a treasure trove of unique goods and souvenirs that showcase the culture and craftsmanship of a region. If you have unused local currency, head to a local market and indulge in some retail therapy. You can pick up local spices, traditional handicrafts, or unique souvenirs to take back home as a reminder of your travels.

Not only will you be supporting local artisans and vendors, but you’ll also have a tangible memento of your trip that will bring back memories for years to come. With breakable souvenirs, have them wrapped well for the journey and double the food entry regulations for home or the next country.

Use It for Last-Minute Experiences:

If you have a small amount of unused local currency left and limited time before you leave the country, consider using it for last-minute experiences. Treat yourself to a local snack, enjoy a cup of coffee at a local café, or take a short taxi ride to explore a nearby attraction. This way, you can fully utilize your currency and create lasting memories of your trip.

Plus, you will get to interact with locals and learn more about their culture and way of life. Given the advance arrival time required by most airlines/airports, use your local currency to grab your last meal at a local spot inside your terminal.

Exchange for Current Currency:

If you have a substantial amount of unused local currency, it might be worth considering exchanging it for your home country’s currency or the currency of your next destination. Many international airports offer currency exchange services, and you can convert your unused currency into a more usable form.

Keep in mind that exchange rates may vary, so it’s a good idea to shop around for the best rates and compare them to avoid unnecessary fees. By exchanging your unused currency, you can use the funds for future travels or everyday expenses back home.

Another practical option for utilizing your unused local currency is saving it for your return trip. If you are a frequent traveler to a location, then you can use the funds on your next trip. Also, pay attention as some economic regions and countries use the same currency by chance are visiting one of these locations soon, then you already have some currency. Saving your leftover currency can be a smart way to start your travel fund for your next adventure.

Keep your unused currency in a safe place, such as a travel wallet, and set it aside for future travels. It’s a great way to get a head start on your next trip and make the most of your travel budget. Saving it and sharing it could also help those of your family or friends who are collectors of coins or bills of global currency. I am sure they would be delighted and thankful if you added to their collection.

Pay It Forward:

Spread positivity and kindness by paying it forward with your unused local currency. One thoughtful way to do this is by leaving a small tip for those who have provided you with services during your trip, such as your tour guide, hotel staff, or restaurant servers. It not only shows gratitude for their service, but also helps support local economies and promotes goodwill between travelers and locals.

It’s a simple act of kindness that can make a big impact and leave a positive impression on your visit long after you’ve left the country.

So, consider paying it forward with your unused local currency and leave a little extra happiness behind as you journey back home. While considering this gesture, also be mindful of the local culture of tipping, as the last thing you want to do as you depart is offend the people of your location.

In conclusion, managing your unused local currency before leaving a country is an important aspect of international travel. While it may be tempting to keep it as a souvenir or to exchange it at the airport, there are more practical and meaningful ways to utilize it. Whether you are donating to a local charity, tipping service workers, or purchasing local products, you can positively impact the community you are leaving behind.

Planning, researching local customs and options, and being mindful of cultural sensitivities will help you make informed decisions about what to do with your unused local currency. By taking these steps, you can leave a country with a sense of fulfillment, knowing that you have made a meaningful contribution and left a positive impression on the local community.

So, as you prepare for your next international adventure, think creatively and responsibly about how to put your unused local currency to good use and leave a positive impact wherever you go.

Happy travels!
